We all have heard that cats usually hate water, right? Not so fast! Sometimes the stereotypes just don’t apply. Believe it or not, there are certain cat breeds that like water. Of course, all cats are individuals and not every cat is the same.
We are sharing a list of the most popular cat breeds that like water. These cats have a variety of factors to like water such as having water-resistant coats, natural swimmers, ancestors who lived near bodies of water, or just overall familiarity in their lineage with water.
Let’s have a look at them:
One of the best examples of cat breeds that like water are the Turkish Vans. They have a waterproof coat that doesn’t hold water. This makes swimming a rather enjoyable experience for them. They are nicknamed “swimming cat” for their affinity for water, enjoying being in water and their love of playing in the water.
Abyssinians are unusually fond of water and have a natural inclination to love water. They enjoy large water bowls or even a fountain to splash in. Abyssinians don’t mind jumping in the bathtub or getting wet. They enjoy swimming more than most other feline breeds.
Turkish Angoras are also often drawn to water. They enjoy splashing in sinks and have even been known to paddle in shallow waters. So, don’t be surprised if your Turkish Angora decides to join you in the bathtub.
Besides being highly intelligent and fun-loving, Maine Coons also love water and are also a big fan of swimming. Their robust bodies are well-suited for holding themselves in water. They’re always up for water play and have been known to scoop water with their paws.
Bengals are known for their love for water and are great swimmers too. These cats have derived from Asian Leopard Cats and still have their natural instinct to splash and play in water. So, they might jump in a tub of water for a little swim. Bengals are fond of drinking water straight from the tap and playing with water when given the chance.
Manx cats are known for their playfulness, high-spirited nature and love of water. These charming cats come in both shorthair and long-hair varieties. These tailless, robust hunting cats are loyal, warm and playful like dogs. Manx are always happy over water play! Don’t be surprised to see your Manx fishing in fountains or playing in the sink.
American Bobtails are big, muscular cats known for their wild appearance and short bobbed tails. They are easy to train, can walk on a leash, and love to play in the water. They’re extremely active and intelligent cats that will play fetch and sometimes even turn on the faucet when they want to splash around. They are often found dunking their toys in the water.
Selkirk Rex enjoys playing in the water while you’re doing dishes or even in the shower. Most of these cats seem to enjoy a good bath or just a little playtime splashing in the sink.
Siberians seem to love and play in the water. They even have a long, triple-layered, water-resistant coat and actually enjoy the water. This might be due to their origins of living in harsh environments. The thick triple coat protected her ancestors during the hard winters of Russia. So, don’t be surprised if your Siberian pal follows you into the shower or bath to play!
Burmese cats are fonder of running water than still water. They may enjoy scooping out water from containers or splashing it around. They are incredible climbers and jumpers. These friendly, playful, and affectionate little creatures are very fond of their humans. They’re well-known for peaceful bath times since they love water and are also quite placid in nature.
